Day 3 Outer Banks - TGIF!
We made it to Friday....yay! We were up and working by 7:30am. There had been quite a storm during the night. The Bungalow (Honestly, you should know better by now -Bill) rode it out with no problems. It swayed a little but not enough to be worrisome. At about 9am we looked out of the window and to our surprise we saw several kite surfers. It was so cool. They were cruising across the sound. Some of the surfers had hydrofoils so they appeared to be flying across the water. The wind and water conditions were perfect for surfing. Lots of pictures and video was taken.
Bill-
What needed a hydrofoil was Big Red... the road to Dale's was under about a foot of water, which makes all of the houses on stilts make so much more sense. Yes... we had a lot of rain, but when your water table is a few feet at most under the soil, there's not much room for water to go. Here's Big Red thinking that it's a submarine.
Mid-morning Bill drove over to drop off Big Red and Dale dropped him back. By 1pm Eric had dropped off a BMW for us to use. Before you say wow a BMW let me explain the condition of the car. As the car pulled into the driveway the breaks squealed a little. Eric said that it was because they needed to warm up. When Eric presented the paperwork to sign he started to check every box on the sheet to show that every area of the car had dings and scratches. Oh well, he was very laid back and I trusted that he wasn't going to rip us off. In for a penny, in for a pound as they say.
Bill-
To be fair, the car kind of fit the vibe of Hatteras island. It worked and got you from A to B, but was a little rough around the edges with tons of character. We later found out that he also ran a auto mechanics and likely fixed up cars and rented them. While there was some interesting features to the BMW, it ran well and got us to the few places we needed to go. Like his Dad, Eric was a great guy and we'd happily rent there again.
I just had to sit outside and work. The kite surfers were just too interesting to sit inside. Plus the weather was just perfect. Not too hot and not too cold. We finished out our work day and then went over to enjoy the ocean waves with a long walk along the beach. There were a few fisherman trying their luck at sea fishing but other than them we had the beach to ourselves yet again. On our way back to the RV Bill encouraged me to call to see if Big Red was ready, which I did hesitantly, and miraculously Dale said that we could come and pick it up. We went straight away as we didn't really want to drive the rental any more than we had to. We had a quick chat with Dale, paid him $80 and left. We dropped off the Beemer and continued to drive ,in a now quiet, Big Red.
Bill-
One of the more curious things in the outer banks is that lots of people drive pickups. Which, in and of itself is not strange. However, the people who fish seem to mount racks to the front of their vehicles to carry rods, coolers, nets and other things. Why do you have a pickup, with a bed, if you are just going to strap gear on the front of your truck? Also, in the time we were here, we never saw anyone catching a fish... and with ocean fishing, they don't really cast either. So... to best of our very uneducated fishing skills, it wasn't fishing so much as sitting on the beach while decorating the sand with poles.
Off on our evening adventure. We'd decided that it was finally time to see the Bond movie, "No Time to Die". We had to travel up to Kill Devils to the movie theater. On the way we stopped at Sooey's BBQ & Rib Shack. A small place that was ranked pretty high on Tripadvisor. We had to agree with the reviews and would highly recommend this place. Great pulled pork and brisket and a really friendly owner with great service.
Entering the movie theater felt like stepping back into the 80s with neon signs and retro furniture. I don't think they had renovated since it opened. It was a good deal though, only $20 for the two of us. We were one of 3 couples in the theater so seating wasn't an issue. We gave the movie 3 stars. It was an average Bond movie.
Bill-
Sadly we both agreed that the latest Bond movie was not very good. Bond is getting old again and the ending was... not what anyone really wanted. the writing was jumbled and the plot was meh. We actually enjoyed the movies we've seen on Netflix more than it. Still, it was nice to get to a movie theater again and date night was nice. Driving 40 minutes to get to a theater is kind of strange, but on the way there we got to experience some of the Outer Banks interesting weather, fog. We could literally see some cloud banks as we drove through them. Kind of cool really!
Back to The Bungalow. It was a late night for me...11:30pm.
