Start of the great adventure!
So earlier in the year, I had two heart surgeries, and we came to the conclusion that waiting to do the things we wanted too as a couple was a bad idea and that we should plan to live life and enjoy it to the fullest. With that said, we went out and bought a 25' trailable RV. While it doesn't have a name, it does have a lot of love into it already and we were excited to hit the road, just the two of us for a trip to Camp Hatteras in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The one we bought is a Rockwood MiniLite, 2507s.
As you can see, we have everything we need for two people to enjoy a few weeks away. A sitting area that converts to a bed, a small eating and working area. Kitchenette and bathroom along with just enough storage for us to keep our things.
As the day to leave approached, we worked on deciding what we needed. Some board games, enough cooking materials to make things when we want too. A grill, a compressor, chairs, and enough clothes to last.
Of course, in perfect fashion, our Dodge Durango 2012 had some manifold problems before we left and had it replaced. Which... becomes more pertinent later on.
Out destination was Camp Hatteras RV park. We had booked a site on the Ocean and were looking forward to working and enjoying some beach front camping.
Here are some maps on where we went and... the location of our first stop.
We started at one on Friday and said we'd drive until I got tired.
So how did that go? Well... packing was mostly fine. We had things in the trailer and everything hooked up to go soon enough. We started to drive and made it about a mile before realizing that I had left my wallet at home and had to go back to retrieve it. No problem, just a few moments. Better here than on the east coast. About a mile more down the road a door on the RV opened and was flapping around. Another stop, secure and make sure nothing was lost. Thankfully it wasn't and we were AGAIN back on the road. Half an hour wasted, but that's okay. We were out earlier than expected and picked up some food and hit the road.
The RV drove well enough and Big Red is a trooper. Getting into Pennsylvania was getting into the Apalacian mountains and the engine did work pretty hard to drag us up. But it did it and drove well enough that I wasn't terrified. As I had said, we were going until I was going to get tired. That happened at about midnight somewhere on the Pennsylvania turnpike at a rest stop. When you pull your own home, you can just put the car in park, go into the back and climb into bed. It was quite nice and really beat many of the cheap hotels that we tend to stay at when we just lay down for the night. With the heater going, we were warm cozy and up by 6:30 in the morning to get going!
